This is a summary of the short story written by Shinichi Hoshi titled “Hey, why won’t you come out!” This story was introduced in a Japanese textbook for secondary education but this is not the copy of it.

This is a story people handed down and it occurred in the village not far from the big city. After the typhoon had gone, a resident found a dark black big hole created where the shrine used to be stood.

People in the village were curious and called out someone to come out by shouting “Hey, why won’t you come out?” but there was no response. Some people wanted to investigate if someone would complain by throwing pieces of stones in to the hole but nothing had happened nor responded.

One day after some period of time had passed, there was a gentle person visited the village and persuaded residents to hand the hole over to him so that he would not only fill up the strange hole but build a shrine which is much gorgeous than it used to be on the alternative place. As the hole was handed over to him, he made a company which abolishes wastes of the nuclear plant. The gentle person appealed the electric company about what he could do and he finally made a contract with the electric company.

It wasn’t true that residents were not anxious on what would happen with this new project, but the gentle person strongly promised and explained that there would be no contamination on the ground for thousands of years. In addition to that he promised to restore a commission to the village. This is why residents agreed on the condition. Soon magnificent streets which were directly connected to the big city were constructed and trucks continuously came into to the village to dispose of wastes from the nuclear plant. However the hole was big enough that many of useless products and chemicals were thrown out. The people in the city, at that time only concerned about development of technology but they didn’t have a plan where to dispose industrial wastes so they were a little released of this disposal system.

Many years had passed. A construction worker was resting during lunch time on the top of the building which was under construction. He heard a shouted voice from the universe said “Why won’t you come out?” and soon a lot of little stones started to fall down on him.
